A physalis supplier has to settle two things with a buyer before anything else: that both sides mean the same fruit, and how it will travel. Hatipoğlu Tarım, an Antalya-based exporter of fresh fruit and vegetables since 2002, prepares physalis for export between February and the end of May and plans each consignment for air freight or refrigerated road transport, as the buyer requests. First, the name: physalis, goldenberry, cape gooseberry
The fruit in question is Physalis peruviana, the orange berry that sits inside a papery husk. In the trade it is called physalis, goldenberry or cape gooseberry. It is not a strawberry of any colour, and a buyer looking for yellow strawberries needs a different product. On our site the fruit is listed on the physalis (goldenberry) product page. The company describes it as a speciality fruit that stands out for its bright colour, its distinctive aroma and its decorative appearance.
Where it grows and when it is harvested
The fruit comes from protected and open-field production around Antalya. According to the product text, the berries ripen slowly in mild Mediterranean conditions and are harvested from February until the end of May. That makes physalis from Turkey a late-winter and spring line of four months. Selection criteria
Hatipoğlu Tarım selects the fruit for export on three points:
- Size: state the size you expect when you enquire.
- Firmness: the berry is checked for firmness.
- General quality: the overall condition of the lot.

Same-day cooling and a carton for a delicate fruit
Each lot is cooled on the day it is picked and is then placed in export packaging in a way that protects the delicate structure of the fruit. The carton measures 40 × 60 × 10 cm. Air freight or refrigerated truck
The company’s product text names two routes for this fruit: physalis is planned for air freight or for refrigerated road transport, according to the buyer’s request. Buyers who import physalis should therefore say at the outset which route suits their market. For road transport the unit of planning is the truck: a standard refrigerated truck of 13.60 m holds 33 euro pallets. HS heading, certificates and residues
Physalis has no six-digit subheading of its own. It is generally declared under HS 0810.90, other fresh fruit, and the full tariff line should be confirmed with your customs broker before shipment. The company is certified to ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and ISO 10002 and holds GLOBALG.A.P. IFA and GRASP. Lots that go to Europe are analysed for residues without exception. The process in six steps
For physalis the sequence is harvest, cooling on the same day, selection by size and firmness, packing into export cartons, cold storage and dispatch by air or by refrigerated truck. All six steps stay within the company.
