A Deveci pear supplier offers a large, firm winter pear that is picked in September and can then be loaded month after month until spring. Hatipoğlu Tarım has been exporting fresh produce from Antalya since 2002 and prepares Deveci for buyers abroad from September to April. If you intend to import pears from Turkey, this guide sets out the season, the quality points, the packing options and the way to a quotation.
Deveci: the winter pear among Turkish pears
Deveci is a variety native to Turkey. The fruit is large, the skin light yellow and the flesh firm, and the variety is known for its suitability for long storage. Among Turkish pears it is the one chosen for its sturdy build: it stands up well to bruising during transport, and buyers prefer it for that reason.
One harvest, eight months of supply
Deveci is harvested in September, at the stage of maturity at which the fruit still holds its firmness. Under suitable cool storage conditions it can be supplied until spring, and our calendar lists it from September to April.
The early counterpart is Santa Maria, a summer pear whose calendar ends in the month Deveci begins. Quince is harvested from September as well and travels at a similar temperature. For other lines, see the season calendar.
Quality points to agree before the first load
We prepare Deveci for export by selecting on size, colour, firmness and surface integrity.
- Size: a large-fruited variety; one size range per crate, set in the order.
- Colour: light yellow, even across the crate.
- Firmness: fruit picked at the right maturity stage so that firmness is retained.
- Surface: sound skin without cuts, punctures or pressure marks.
What the published data say about storing winter pears
The figures in this section are not specific to Deveci: they are the general data published for winter pears by UC Davis. They give an optimum of −1 to 0 °C at 90–95% relative humidity, with freezing between −1.5 and −2 °C. The controlled atmosphere cited is 1–2% oxygen with 0–1% carbon dioxide, and the best conditions for ripening are 15–22 °C at 90–95% humidity.
The same data describe senescent scald: dark brown patches on the skin that show after long storage. Rapid cooling and the correct temperature keep it to a minimum. Among storage diseases, grey mould (Botrytis cinerea) is named as the most serious and blue mould (Penicillium expansum) as the second. Temperature control between store and destination is the subject of our article on the cold chain in fresh produce export.
Four pack options and the customs heading
Deveci can be packed in carton, wood or plastic, according to the shipment plan:
- carton, 30 × 50 × 12.5 cm
- carton, 60 × 40 × 15 cm
- wooden crate, 30 × 50 × 12.5 cm
- plastic crate, 30 × 50 × 12.5 cm
How these footprints sit on a pallet is explained in packaging and case sizes in export. Pears fall under HS 0808.30; ask your customs broker to confirm the complete tariff line before the goods move.
Planning the truck: pallets and mixed loads
Shipments are planned truck by truck. The vehicle is a standard 13.60 m refrigerated truck, and its capacity is 33 euro pallets of 80 × 120 cm; see also our notes on loading and pallet patterns.
A pear buyer who also takes apples or quinces can combine them, because the three are transported at temperatures close to each other, around 0 °C. Two limits apply. These fruits produce ethylene, and putting them in one vehicle with ethylene-sensitive produce – leafy vegetables and cucumbers, for example – is not recommended. Tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and cucumbers from the greenhouse are carried at about 10 °C and cannot be held at pear temperature.
Certificates and residue control
The company works under ISO 9001, ISO 22000 and ISO 10002 and is certified to GLOBALG.A.P. IFA and GRASP. Each lot destined for Europe is analysed for residues; the rules behind this are summarised in EU pesticide MRLs.
Import process: six steps handled by one pear exporter in Turkey
As a pear exporter in Turkey we keep all six steps in our own hands. We harvest in September, cool the fruit, grade it by size and colour, pack it in the crate type you have chosen, keep it in cold storage and dispatch it by refrigerated truck.
