A black radish supplier deals in a winter root that is bought for its character: a dark skin outside, white flesh inside. Hatipoğlu Tarım, an Antalya-based exporter of fresh fruit and vegetables founded in 2002, supplies it from October to April. This guide is short on purpose: it tells importers, wholesalers and retail buyers what the company states about the product, what little published data applies to it, how it is packed and what we need in order to quote.
Black radish from Turkey: dark skin, white flesh
Black radish is a winter vegetable with a dark skin, a white interior and a pronounced aroma. The contrast between skin and flesh defines the product, and skin integrity is one of the three points on which the roots are selected.
From late-summer sowing to autumn harvest
Black radish is sown at the end of summer and harvested from autumn onwards. The company notes that cool nights support the characteristic quality of the root. It can be supplied from October to April, which makes it a line for the cold half of the year and a natural partner for the other two radishes in the range: white radish and Vezir radish. All three are on offer in the same months. Buyers who import black radish can therefore plan all three in one programme.
What the roots are selected on
- Size: roots are selected by size; the range you need belongs in the order.
- Skin integrity: a dark skin that is whole, without cuts or peeling.
- Internal quality: sound white flesh.
General data published by UC Davis for radish describe the two internal faults a buyer should know: roots left too long become pithy and harsh in flavour, and roots that grew slowly turn woody and pungent. A cut sample on arrival shows both.
Preparation: topped, washed, ventilated
The leaves are removed, the roots are washed, and the product is packed in ventilated crates that help it stay fresh. Black radish is therefore delivered as a clean, topped root.
Temperature and humidity: general radish data only
The values below are the general data UC Davis publishes for radish, given here as research data and not as the company’s practice: 0 °C and a relative humidity of 95–100%, with rapid cooling named as essential for storage potential. According to the same source, radish is not sensitive to ethylene.
Those conditions place black radish with cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, carrot and sweet corn, all of which are transported at around 0 °C and high humidity and may be loaded together. General principles are set out in the cold chain in fresh produce export.
Packaging for black radish wholesale
The listed pack is a plastic crate of 30 × 40 × 14 cm, ventilated, on euro pallets of 80 × 120 cm. The certificates held are ISO 9001, ISO 22000, ISO 10002, GLOBALG.A.P. IFA and GRASP. Residue analysis is done for each lot sent to Europe. For the limits themselves, see EU pesticide MRLs.
Import process
For a winter radish supplier the six steps are the usual ones of fresh produce: harvest, cooling, grading, packing, cold storage and dispatch. With black radish, topping and washing come before packing. Trucks are the planning unit; the standard refrigerated truck is 13.60 m long and carries 33 euro pallets. If you are comparing sources, our Turkish fruit and vegetable suppliers guide lists the questions worth asking.
