Mandarin

Mandarin season opens in October and runs to March, moving variety by variety: Satsuma first, easy-peeling and seedless, then Nova and Fremont as the winter deepens and the sugar rises.

The fruit is picked with a short button left on, degreened only where the market asks for it, and packed loose or in nets. Skin is loose by nature, which is the selling point and also the reason mandarins bruise if a case is stacked wrong.
